Japan, Iraq, Brazil...the tooth fairy is a busy lady! She travels all over the world every night collecting teeth and passing out money. Occasionally she gets in a hurry and arrives at a house without exchanging her money for the local currency. It happens to us ALL of the time! So, we get Turkish lira, Japanese yen, euros, pesos, or whatever she has in exchange for our teeth. It's fun to try to identify the coins or bills and then look up the exchange rate and find out how much they're worth.
The first time the tooth fairy visited our house was not a happy occasion. It was just after our 4 year old son had a horrible bike wreck where he fell face first into a curb. He knocked a tooth out and dislocated his jaw in addition to making hamburger of his beautiful face (thank God he was wearing a helmet!) After 13 hours at two different hospitals we finally brought him home. In the hustle and bustle of trying to stop the bleeding and get him to the hospital we hardly noticed that big brother had picked up the dislodged tooth. The next day we went to see our pediatric dentist, with the tooth, and they gently checked him over. For the lost tooth they gave us a cool treasure box to go under his pillow. The next morning, to our amazement, we found 40 Million Turkish Lira in place of the box! I guess the more traumatic the tooth loss, the more loot.
Today we lost another tooth. We're hoping the the tooth fairy can find us on the road and wondering if she will remember to make change before she gets here. Not likely:)

You're right. I get a lot of great ideas from Family Fun magazine. I usually just google "exchange rate" and then the coin amount and something will turn up. Not very scientific or organized Regarding your travels, have you seen this website? http://www.cross-country-trips.com/ It chronicles the journeys of a family who traveled with 2 boys over the summers just like you. She gives lots of information...great resource!

We must have the same tooth fairy because she (or he) regularly gives our kids international coins, too. I saw the tip in "Family Fun" magazine years ago. But I never thought about looking up the exchange rate. I think my boys (10 & 6) would really enjoy doing this. What resources do you use to do this? That sounds like a fun project for us.
I have really enjoyed this website. We are doing something similar to your encounter, but we're going in much shorter chunks and only during the summer months in our camper. Looking forward to reading more.
Absolutely no insight here. The picture just made us laugh. Our boys are completely content to be visited by feminine fairies, as long as they leave money. By the way...the take was 200 Costa Rican Colones (which works out to about .39 American). They're big gold coins that look impressive!
So Jennifer, your story mentions a tooth fairy "she"--but the picture alongside the story is CLEARLY a "he". Which is it? My kids want to know, because we have wondered the same thing at our house. Once the tooth fairy even left a note for Bailey--assuring us that he was a very masculine fairy. There is a "he" in the Santa Clause movies, too. But I don't know. Any insight?
