History Trippin'

Adventrue In March of 2008 our family of four (plus 1 dog) hit the road for a yearlong tour of the United States focusing on American History. This website is our journal from start to finish. Here we have passed along how we homeschooled on the road and specifically what we learned about American history. We've also provided some lesson plans and activity suggestions so that you can learn too!  Continue...
Hiking the Flatirons in Boulder
Tour By State - Colorado
Friday, 01 August 2008

flatirons.jpgWe are fortunate to have 3 sets of friends in the Denver area, so we’ve had no shortage of friends to show us around.  It’s been great.  Familiar playmates!  One of our coolest adventures was hiking in Boulder with our friends Jack and Anne and their mom Missy near the rock formation called the Flatirons.  As we got out of the car we were greeted with beautiful music.  It was all around us and although we had come to hike, we first had to know where the music was coming from.  We followed the drums and the flutes and the violins to the Chautauqua Auditorium where we found the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra practicing for a concert that evening!  What a surprise!  The interior of the auditorium was covered in huge wooden beams – very rustic, but the sound quality was great.  Since the doors were propped open we walked in and sat among the handful of other visitors who had been drawn to the music and listened for a while.

Royal Gorge
Tour By State - Colorado
Thursday, 24 July 2008

royalgorgecolorado.jpg The Royal Gorge – Grand Canyon of Colorado.  World’s highest suspension bridge.  Sounds impressive, right?  The boys enjoyed it, but I was a little underwhelmed.  It may have had something to do with the fact that I couldn’t look around while crossing the bridge.  It’s a wonder I made it across at all.  (I still have a terrible fear of heights)  My first attempt ended in retreat after about 15 feet.  Nobody told me that the bottom of the bridge was covered in (what looked to be) old wooden planks and that there were GAPS between them!  The bridge is over 1000 feet above the Arkansas River and it’s 1/4 mile long!  Plus, they let CARS drive over the thing!  I was sure it would collapse while we were on it and we would all plummet to our deaths.  The boys, however, weren’t convinced.  “Hey, Mom, look at this,” they’d taunt.  Very funny.
